About Marine Department

Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology is well known throughout the biological scientists of the North Arabian Sea from its high level goal oriented research published during the last 40 years. CEMB offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in the areas of biological, chemical and geological massive studies. Student receive extensive exposure & invaluable training in the conservation & management of marine inshore & offshore ecosystem through intensive field work in Mangroves, oyster reefs rocky intertidal Zone, open surf, coastal waters & aquaculture. In instead of teaching this center also works with a variety of industry partners in the interface between human activity and the marine environmental research.

History

The Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology was established as Department of Marine Biology in 1969. In 1973, it was given the status of Institute of Marine Biology. Later on, in 1975 the Federal Government elevated its status as Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology under the Centre of Excellence Act of 1974. The Centre is financially supported by the Higher Education Commission. It is administered by a Board of Governors whose Chairman is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi. The Director is the executive and academic head of the Centre. The Board of Advance Studies and Research and the Academic Council of the University of Karachi approves the academic programmes of the Centre. The degrees are awarded by the University of Karachi. The Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology is the only institution in Pakistan, which offers degrees in Marine Biology at    M. Phil. and Ph. D. level. This Centre has produced 67 M. Phil. students. and 13 Ph.D. students.

Research

At present the Center is actively engaged in following wide range
of research programs.
Development of specialisms in shellfish aquaculture, 2006-2008. DFID/British Council H.E. Link (P.I.: Dr. Zarrien Ayub).
Aqua feed formulation and assessment for marketing. Funded by HEC (P.I.: Dr. P.J.A. Siddiqui).
